On Luna's birthday, the whole family goes out for dim sum--but Luna and her brothers can't agree on how to share their pork buns fairly. How can three people divide up five buns? Should some siblings get more than others? Or should they cut the buns into smaller and smaller pieces so everyone gets the same amount? A playful exploration of division and fractions, featuring Chinese American characters and a cultural note.

Storytelling Math celebrates children using math in their daily adventures as they play, build, and discover the world around them. Joyful stories and hands-on activities make it easy for kids and their grown-ups to explore everyday math together. Developed in collaboration with math experts at STEM education nonprofit TERC, under a grant from the Heising-Simons Foundation.

Luna's Yum Yum Dim Sum is a clever picture book about food, culture, sibling dynamics, and of course, math! When a dinner outing takes a sad turn, Luna and her brothers have to engage their math and negotiation skills so that they can all get two pork buns each. If you enjoy funny picture books that provide ample opportunity to learn about culture, do some counting, simple addition, subtraction and division, this is an excellent choice!

The book uses food to work out some maths problems and that is something that will really help kids – maths is not the greatest for a lot of children – it certainly wasn’t my strongest area, so any book that uses a different way or a fun story to try and help is good with me.

The story is easy to follow and understand and it is probably one for slightly older children that have already been at school for a couple of years as opposed to a book for younger kids.

It is 4 stars from me for this one – a great idea that was well developed – highly recommended!

Natasha Yim’s charming tale will captivate readers with her funny and realistic competition between the siblings for the remaining two pork buns after Luna drops one. Her pitch-perfect dialogue invites kids to try and figure out how to divide the buns along with Luna, Kai, and Benji.

An enchanting read that combines math with familiar family dynamics, Luna’s Yum Yum Dim Sum is a story that will spark mathematical experimentation and understanding both at home and in the classroom, making the book an excellent choice for family, school, and public libraries.
